Temple Grandin
Temple Grandin is a successful person. Temple was born on August 29, 1947, in Boston Massachusetts. Her parents name are Richard Grandin and Eustacia Cutler. Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism when she was just 2 years old. Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Grandin is not married and has no children. She earned a degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in 1970, followed by a master’s degree in animal science from Arizona State University and a doctoral degree in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In high school she became close to 2 people, Dr. Carlock & her roommate in college, she was blind. One of her close friends, Dr. Carlock told Temple something that she always thinks of. “Think of it as a door, a door that is going to open up into a whole new world for you… and all you need to decide to go through it.” Dr. Carlock told Temple this because she was afraid of leaving high school, she didn’t want to leave to college. So Dr. Carlock motivated her with this quote. Right now in the present, she is a professor at Colorado State University. So she lives in Colorado. But now, she is known as Dr. Grandin.
Temple Grandin is a very famous person. She is known for her design of a slaughterhouse for cattle’s. As a teen, Temple went to visit her aunt Ann to her ranch every summer. Temple would get really stressful at times. In cause of her stress, she liked being in the “squeeze machine” for cattle’s. When she went off to college she build one, in order to calm her down. Now, it’s called a “hug machine”. It is now a huge help for children with autism since they don’t like to be touched. Temple Grandin is also a writer. She has written so many interesting books. Almost all her books are about autism. She wrote a book called “The Autistic Brain”. This book talks about the understanding of how a person’s brain works that has autism. Her other most famous book is “Animals Make Us Human”. This book talks about how we can give our animals the best and the happiest lives - on their terms, not ours. But, there are so many other books that she has written.
Dr. Carlock’s quote motivated Temple a lot. Ever since he told her that, Grandin sees every opportunity as a door, she just decides to go through it or not. If I did the same thing and saw every opportunity as door, i wouldn’t be so scared to do something new. I wouldn’t be afraid to take on risks. For example, if someone would ask for me to sing, of course I’d say “no thank you”. But if I saw that opportunity as a door, I’d think “just another door” and actually sing. This is actually a really good tip. It is good to see obstacles as opportunities. Life sure isn’t easy, but just take it head on and remember what Dr. Carlock told Temple. This got her through life. There are going to be many obstacles in life, you will just want it easy but it might be easy if you think “just another door”.
